Master Perfumer Roja Dove, in collaboration with Macallan’s own Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno, brought to life the third limited bottling in the distillery’s yearly Edition Series, The Macallan Edition No. 3, showcasing the ‘power of aroma.’
This dram inspired in the perfume-making art form is a gem on the nose. White pears, sweet citrus, apricots, and green apples make the core, followed by delicate wildflower aromas, cinnamon, pickled ginger, and vanilla paste.
On the lighter side, this malt is fresh and lively, quite round, and intensely flavored. Sweet fruit, flowers, and light-toasted oak spices, together with a unique resin scent from a selection of American and European casks, is much more aromatic than textural.
A long, elegant finish reminiscent of fruit, white flowers, and oak resin in the aftertaste, leaving a pleasant mouthfeel, lighter than the average Macallan, but quite attractive and feminine.
Involving a master perfume maker is not a gimmick. The nose in Edition No. 3 is truly unique. The right malts and casks become colors in an artist palette to bring out distinctive aromas of white fruits and flowers — each flavor naturally compatible with the next. On the lighter side, it’s hard to get tired of this single malt.
Perhaps equally elegant and fragrant is The Macallan Classic Cut, a 2017 limited release instantly recognizable for its mahogany color and red label. The nose is layered and flowery, perhaps spicier but with a similarly balanced nose over a light-bodied palate.
