The second release for The Macallan’s Edition Series, No.2, is a very special malt. Not only does it display an attractive orange label to match the expression’s dark golden color, but it’s also a unique collaboration between The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno and the Roca brothers, from the acclaimed 3-Michelin starred restaurant El Celler de Can Roca, in Spain. Four different casks, both American and European, gives this expression a layered bouquet infused with creativity.
The very charming aromas of raw sugar, candied ginger, and toffee complement a rich malt of sultanas and caramelized figs over a thick layer of oaky vanilla. It’s the diverse cask combination adding complementing aromas that evolve in the glass.
Palate-coating and concentrated, this rich malt has a sophisticated mouthfeel infused with dried fruits, molasses, and toffee adorned with spices, ginger, and vanilla in a very appealing ensemble as balanced as the Roca brother’s cuisine.
A clean yet heavy finish reminds you of warm spices and roasted almonds, leaving a very long aftertaste that invites you to take another sip. A special dram indeed suitable for fine dining scenarios.
The creative and inventive combination of refill hogsheads, sherry butts, and puncheons, each selected by one of the four creative minds behind this malt, makes it a complete surprise, not your ordinary Macallan, but a bolder expression. Josep, Joan, and Jordi Roca really put their thoughts into this blend, making No. 2 perhaps the most collectible label on The Macallan’s Edition Series.
The Macallan Enigma, the finest expression of the distillery’s quest Collection, shares a similar flavor profile with Edition No. 2, bringing forward dried fruits, ginger, and caramel notes. These balanced expressions are crowd-pleasing and approachable, yet exclusive and definitely contemplative.
