It comes in an ultra-modern crystal grade glass decanter inspired in the distillery’s famous “Swing” bottle, released in the early 20th-century. A collector’s piece as coveted as the rarest single malts; this is Johnnie Walker putting its serious face celebrating its success through history.
An immediate bust of aromas hits the nose evoking memories of crème caramel, toffee, orange peel potpourri, and slow-roasted walnuts. A very mature malt showing age and finesse, but plenty of vitality and warmth.
Expressive from start to finish, the palate unfolds, revealing precise flavors one after the other. Caramel, blueberry honey, and toffee dominate the expansive taste, followed by citrus hints in the mid-palate over a pleasant roasted nut backdrop.
Smoky honey-caramel and hints of vanilla permeate the aftertaste, leaving a hard-to-describe vibrancy that invites you to take another sip while refreshing your palate with chilled water.
Johnnie Walker is better known for delivering forward malts of polished but explosive profiles. Yet, Odyssey adds to the house-style layers of subtlety and refinement. This is still very much a Walker, but a very mature version. A must-try for the category, and an authentic collector’s item.
The John Walker & Sons Private Collection 2015 is another mature expression of the house’s style, and it’s also available in a lovely decanter. The 2015 won Double Gold Medal and was named “Best Blended Scotch - No Age Statement.”
